Today’s Amazon haul (along with purple balance beam). Yes, I know that mosquitoes are God’s creatures too, but it’s kill or be killed. My students and I are being eaten alive! The mosquitoes 🦟 have to go!

Super week-end à l’Assemblée Générale de @fpmpfrance. Table ronde, ateliers, présentations de la Commission Scientifique,et cours. J’ai retrouvé avec grand plaisir les autres membres du CA, @studio_pilates_bm , @pilateswithjanetoulouse , @maxmanfroi, @espritpilatesannecy @jobouis_pilates @studiobeatricelaurentparis @equilibrepilatesmontreuil et bien sur, la génialissime Bozena, ainsi qu’Alain. J’étais heureuse de revoir @dinakirkdorffer @helenenourry_pilates @nirinapilates, @studiorituel, @studiopilatesdecannes @mauramulvaney, @studioparispilates, @carlos_core_en_mouvement, @carolina_sendic_pilates et les autres membres de la communauté de Pilates, certains que je vois tous les mois au rdv mensuels de Partageons Pilates. J’étais également ravie de rencontrer @pilates.lovers qui nous a régalé avec des histoires de son studio de Pilates à Beverly Hills dans les années 70’s. Vivement nos prochaines retrouvailles!

Swapped out black straps.

When COVID first hit, I covered all of the straps and handles on my studio with black vinyl for easier disinfection. I have just now removed all of the vinyl covering and replaced some of the black straps with colored ones. These « Divanas » were made by @arregon_pilates and cover my Gratz reformers so I can use them for my six person mat classes. #pilates #pilatesfrance #pilatessaintmaur #pilateshistory #pilatesarchivalrevival #pilatesmat #colorcoordination

The first photo shows voice teacher William Herman teaching Mary Martin inside his studio. Herman was the voice teacher of many famous singers, including Martin, Roberta Peters, Elaine Malbin and Nedda Casei. Peters, Martin and Casei also took lessons with Joe Pilates. Herman had his students sing while simultaneously performing exercises, including headstands. Herman had several pieces of Joe’s equipment, including a ped-o-pul, spine corrector and Divana. The Divana was a piece of equipment that combined a reformer, mat and barrel. There was also a version that had a half trapeze table (like today’s wall units). There were a few divanas that we have seen in photos but they haven’t been made for decades. I’ve only seen photos of three divanas. My theory is that they were impractical in a studio setting because the top was rather heavy for hinges and also took up a lot of space when opened, requiring a teacher to be on the same side of the students all the time. That’s why when @arregon_pilates made me something similar to put over my reformer, they made it so it could be easily removed and propped up to the side. (Second photo) The image of Herman and Martin was taken by Toni Frisell and shared by @elaine_ewing, whose website, www.rhinebeckpilates.com is a veritable treasure trove of historical information that Elaine has uncovered and generously shares with the Pilates community. Elaine shared many other photos from the same photo shoot (only a few were published). Purple toe corrector! This is purple vinyl. It’s a bit thicker, like Joe’s, although Joe’s swivelled. I do have one that swivels, but this one doesn’t . It does match my studio colors, though.

Happy Mother’s Day

Today I just wanted to highlight this special piece and the special people that made it for me. I refer to it as my Divana. (I actually have two). It was inspired by the wonderful apparatus of the same name created by Joseph Pilates. He made several that we’ve seen, all of them a bit different. Even the handles all have different placements, the slope of the barrel as well. The Divana was a combination reformer, mat and small barrel and there was also one that was a combination reformer, mat, barrel and tower!! On the one with the tower, it really just looks like a small barrel placed on top on what looks like today’s high mats. The upholstery was all separate. Other iterations we’ve seen do not have the tower. We see Joe sitting on it with Clara, performing some exercises on the barrel part, and also on the reformer. The top part opened to the side with hinges. I always thought it would be great to reproduce the Divana, although the hinges and the weight of the top part make it impractical to make one exactly like his. One day I was contemplating the small size of my studio and thinking that it would be great if I could optimize the space taken by my reformers and use it for my small mat classes. I contacted the Spanish company @arregon_pilates, which has been making classical equipment for many years. It’s a family owned company founded by Rosa Inés Arreghini González. I’ve spoken many times to her wonderfully efficient and charming daughter, Carolina, and made many requests that have probably caused production to hate me😂😂😂. But they’ve never said so, and have always gone out of their way to accommodate my beyond crazy requests (and never shown the slightest annoyance, only enthusiasm). More on that in a future post😂😂. In these photos, you can see the equipment, and one of my students doing the small bicycle on the barrel part. You can also see how I just easily I just take it off to use my reformer. I have it over my Gratz. This first Divana I had made in turquoise to match the reformer.
